The smell of Spring has now been in the air since mid December, which has made the wait for Opening Day all that much harder. Since the first 60 degree day, I have patiently been awaiting the opportunity to listen to the sounds of the game, the clacks and slaps created when the ball connects with the bat and glove, the umpire calling pitches, and the slew of salesmen shouting out 'Popcorn, Peanuts, Beer. . .'. This past week alone I have attempted to purchase a bag of peanuts and a frozen lemonade in my dreams on several occasions.
In Redlegs Nation we received word late last night that a potential LONG TERM deal has been struck with Joey Votto. Although there is no news as of yet of the ink meeting the paper the official announcement is likely just around the corner. It is only logical that they wait to make the official announcement at GABP and with players now back in the Tri-State we could hear news at anytime. I am predicting that this may take place this evening at the first ever Futures Game held at GABP as this would only add to the hype leading into Opening Day on Thursday.
This deal has been reported by US Today as being for 10-years and worth $225 million. This ultimately turns into a 12-year deal worth 251.5 million as it is on-top of the 2 years remaining on Votto's contract that was active through 2013. In addition to the large financial component of this deal, it has been reported that there is a NO TRADE clause in the contract, in my mind, this practically guarantees that he will end his MLB career in the same city in which he began it.
Although this news is very exciting it does cause concern in my mind. The Reds Organization have just committed a very large percentage of their payroll to one player, although in order to compete long term I do believe this was a necessity. Where my concern lies is with our lack of a deal with our second baseman, Mr. DatDudBP, who has been very verbal about his desire to be a lifetime Cincinnati Red. This offseason proved that 1st base was going to be the money position throughout the league, and I do believe it will prove to be cheaper that the club locked up Votto before he was able to draw bids from other teams, this was ultimately a very good business decision. I do worry about the player that provides the club and city with the most media attention. DatDudeBP is a Twitter king, he is not the first (hence the former Bengal, Chad Ocho Cinco) but he is the most positive. The attention that he brings the club is nothing but upbeat, he is the fans player and is additionally a fan himself. He goes out of the way to entertain and interact with the Redlegs Nation. Although I have not had the chance to meet him, I feel like I know him simply by how expressive he is through his tweets and interviews.
With the commitment that the club has just made to Votto, I hope they are willing to make an additional commitment to our second baseman. I do not expect Brandon Phillips to draw the paycheck that Joey Votto is, but I hope a deal can be struck to keep DatDudeBP in Cincinnati for his entire career.
Now, lets play some ball!
